Helping you to help blind and partially sighted people

Gateway Champions

What does a Champion do?

Want to make a difference? Be a Gateway Champion.

Are you committed to improving library services for visually impaired people?
Can you help make things change and happen ?

Then Gateway NEEDS YOU

What is Gateway ?

Gateway works to improve access to reading and library services for visually impaired people.

What is a Gateway Champion ?

We want each local authority to have a Gateway "Champion" to act as a catalyst for change in their own area to improve library services.

What will the Gateway Champion do?

We will ask the Champion to :

  • show a commitment to service improvement with particular reference to the needs of visually impaired people,
  • act as a channel of communication between the Gateway project, voluntary sector and library service,
  • share best practice and information through the Gateway web side,
  • inform and support public library staff by promoting Gateway to them and other organisations as appropriate,
  • identify local training needs to support staff in providing services to visually impaired people,
  • support the development and implementation of regional workshops.

How much time will it take?

It's hard to say, a lot will depend on how active you are in the role. Most communication will be by email.

How will we help you?

Gateway will help you by providing :

  • a telephone and email helpdesk,
  • a web site to answer queries about a whole range of library services, reading material and useful technology,
  • publicity material,
  • regional workshops.

What's in it for you?

This would be a great opportunity to :

  • continue your professional development especially if this is an area you are not usually involved in,
  • develop new knowledge and skills,
  • take advantage to network,
  • raise your profile within your organisation.

Who we are looking for?

You do not need to be a librarian or have particular knowledge in working with services for visually impaired people. What we do need you to have is passion and commitment plus a willingness to put improvements into practice.

You do need your line manager to agree that you can take on this role.

Gateway Discussion group

Gateway is pleased to announce that we are working in partnership with The Network. The Network is a network of public libraries, museums, archives, other organisations and individuals committed to tackling social exclusion - (see: www.seapn.org.uk)

It coordinates a number of email lists via JISCMAIL, including one called, not unsurprisingly (!), "The Network", which is the general list for sharing info, asking questions, etc. Strictly speaking, it's open only to Network members and partners, but as we've agreed to work together on this it is open to Gateway Champions.

To join The Network JISCMAIL list (so you can post & receive emails via it), please send an email to John Vincent john@nadder.org.uk asking to join it. Please mention that you would like to join in your capacity as Gateway Champion. To post to The Network JISCMAIL list, just address your email to the-network@jisc.ac.uk
